WOMEN IN FILM
Shelly Chopra Dhar attended the Motion Picture Institute and graduated having successfully completed the schools intensive one year motion picture production program. For the last few years, Shelly has been developing a project for Bollywood and last year she filmed entirely on location in India. This February her feature directorial debut, 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga', (loosely translated meaning, "I Saw The Girl"), has been released internationally in theaters to major critical acclaim.
Ema Edosio came from Nigeria to study at the Motion Picture Institute. After graduating, she returned to Africa where she wrote and directed her feature film, 'KASALA', that has played in major film festivals before getting a wide scale theatrical release in Africa.
Rola Nashef studied film production at MPI where she developed a project entitled, 'Detroit Unleaded', that was selected for the prestigious Sundance Institute’s Writer’s Workshop. This led to representation by the major talent agency, CAA. Rola produced and directed a feature version of Detroit Unleaded in the Motor City. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has since been released nationwide. Rola’s MPI education also led to her teaching film studies at the Big Ten college, Michigan State University. Major accomplishments from another MPI graduate.
MPI Grad, Amber Harley-Smith, is a successful script supervisor with credits on some of Hollywood’s biggest motion pictures including,'Marvel’s THOR: Ragnarok', 'Transformers', 'Baby Driver', "Batman vs. Superman" and much more. MPI Grad, Sarah Goller, worked as a Production Assistant on big films such as, James Cameron’s: 'Avatar', 'The Dark Knight', and more. MPI Grad, Heidi Philipsen, is a member of the Producer’s Guild of America and recently CoDirected her first feature film, 'Darcy.'
Success stories for women aren’t just behind the scenes. MPI’s elite performers program for actors produced graduate, Julie Kline, who landed the lead role alongside screen veteran, Lance Henriksen, ('ALIENS', 'Terminator'), and Allen Maldonado, ('The Last OG') in MIMESIS: NOSFERATU. The film recently screened in Rome, Italy at the 38th annual FANTAFESTIVAL and will be released worldwide in 2019.
For years MPI has been known for offering an elite hands on film education that is both cost effective and well connected to the industry. Now, with so many success stories for our Women in Film, it makes us proud that MPI is one of the best film schools in the country.
